Pattern:

Actions:

  • Promotes urination, drains dampness, and clears heat
  • Nourishes Yin and Fluids.

Indications:

  • Urinary difficulty with fever, thirst, and a desire to drink fluids, irritability, and insomnia
  • Other possible symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, cough, painful and bloody urination with pain and abdominal fullness.

Possible Tongue Appearance:

  • Red with a dry yellow coat

Possible Pulse Patterns:

  • Thin and rapid pulse

Western Uses:

  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Nephritis
  • Dysuria
  • Hemorrhagic Shock

Cautions, Contraindications, Herb Drug Interactions:

  • Do not use in cases with thirst from excess heat in the Yang Ming stage

Preparation Notes:

  • Decoction. Add E Jiao to the final strained decoction. Modern formulations usually increase the dosage 2-3 times the amounts listed.
