Late or Delayed Menses (Yue Jing Ho Ji)

Blood Deficiency (Xue Deficiency + Kidney Qi Deficiency)

Formulas and Herbs:

  • Gui Shen Wan (Shu Di, Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Fu Ling, Dang Gui, Gou Qi Zi, Du Zhong, Tu Si Zi) + Zi He Si, Rou Cong Rong, Dan Shen, Niu Xi

Modifications:

  • With cold: + Rou Gui
  • With abdominal pain: + E Jiao, Xiang Fu
  • With not much Kidney Deficiency: use either Ba Zhen Tang or Gui Pi Tang, modify as needed

Acupuncture Points:

  • REN-4
  • KI-13 Moxa

Yang Deficiency

Formulas and Herbs:

  • You Gui Yin (Shu Di, Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Gou Qi Zi, Gan Cao, Du Zhong, Rou Gui, Fu Zi)

Modifications:

  • You Gui Wan is You Gui Yin Gan Cao, + Tu Si Zi, Lu Jiao Jiao, Dang Gui.
    This form is stronger in function but more slowly absorbed, used for long term (3 or months, follow-up)

Acupuncture Points:

  • Use points indicated for the general pattern

Yin Deficiency

Formulas and Herbs:

  • Zuo Gui Yin (Shu Di, Shan Yao, Gou Qi Zi, Zhi Gan Cao, Fu Ling, Shan Zhu Yu) + Dan Shan, Niu Xi, Yi Mu Cao (sometimes)

Modifications:

  • With insomnia: + Suan Zao Ren
  • With intense thirst: + Nan Sha Shen, Bei Sha Shen, Mai Men Dong
  • With night sweats: + Wu Wei Zi

Acupuncture Points:

  • NO Moxa.
  • Use DU, KI, LIV, Spleen channels (otherwise, the same as Yang Deficiency)

Cold Congestion

Formulas and Herbs:

  • Wen Jing Tang (Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Ren Shen, Bai Shao, Rou Gui, E Zhu, Mu Dan Pi, Niu Xi, Gan Cao) + Wu Zhu Yu, Gui Zhi, E Jiao

Modifications:

  • When treatment is not working: + Shi Xiao San (Pu Huang, Wu Ling Zhi)
  • With heavy bleeding: E Zhu, Niu Xi + Pao Jiang, Ai Ye

Acupuncture Points:

  • REN-6
  • KI-13
  • ST-29,25 Moxa
  • With more cold: + REN-4 Moxa

Qi Stagnation

Formulas and Herbs:

  • Jia Wei Wu Chen San (Sha Ren, Tan Xiang or Mu Xiang, Yan Hu Suo, Xiang Fu, Gan Cao, Wu Yao) + Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong

Modifications:

  • With delayed period and dark, red heavy bleeding: + Mu Dan Pi, Zhi Zi
  • With very tender breasts , chest pain: + Chen Pi, Bai Shao

Acupuncture Points:

  • REN-3,4
  • SJ-4
  • LIV-14
  • GB-34
  • LIV-3

Phlegm Blockage - Tan Zhu

Formulas and Herbs:

  • Er Chen Tang (Ban Xia, Chen Pi or Ju Hong, Fu Ling, Zhi Gan Cao, Sheng Jiang) + Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong

Modifications:

  • If in need of more drying action: + Ju Hong Chen Pi
  • With more Spleen Qi Deficiency: + Ren Shen, Bai Zhu
  • With nausea, chest tightness: Sha Ren, Zhi Ke
  • With heavy vaginal discharge: + Cang Zhu, Yi Yi Ren
  • With vertigo (DH-type): + Tian Ma, Yuan Zhi

Acupuncture Points:

  • REN-6,12
  • ST-36,40
  • BL-17,20
  • SP-6,9
