2nd Edition Changes
Sun. Mar 07, 2010
Since the first edition of the book, there have been a handful of pinyin and Chinese character updates/changes along the way. Now, there are over 30 updated photos. They either correct misidentified/adulterated herbs, or they are a better representation than existing photos. The new books also have sharper photos, and the color is more accurate than the 1st edition. Check the VMMCH-Rev2-Changes PDF for major changes.

Misidentified Herb Updates...
Thu. Feb 25, 2010
After reading Eric Brand's blog post, I took a trip up to Spring Wind Herbs in Berkeley, CA. Andy Ellis was kind enough to help me identify, as well as let me photograph, the misidentified and aldultered herbs on sacredlotus.com (and then some). If you're interested in the highest quality Chinese herbs for your practice, as well as organic Chinese herbs, I would highly recommend checking out Spring Wind Herbs.

The following herbs have new photos, and possible changed information:

Bai Jiang Cao | Bai Qian | Bai Tou Weng | Bai Wei | Ban Lan Gen | Ban Xia | Fu Shen | Cang Er Zi | Ce Bai Ye | Chaun Niu Xi | Chuan Bei Mu | Dang Gui | Da Xue Teng (Hong Teng) | Dong Chong Xia Cao | E Bu Shi Cao | Fu Ping | Fu Zi | Ge Gen | Hai Feng Teng | Han Fang Ji | He Huan Hua | He Shou Wu | Huang Qi | Mi Meng Hua | Qing Hao | Sheng Ma | Wang Bu Liu Xing | Wu Jia Pi | Xi Xin Gen | Yi Mu Cao | Zhi Shi | Zi Cao

Americans spend $34 billion on CAM a year
Tue. Aug 11, 2009
Americans spent just under $34 billion on CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) in 2007. That's more than one third of adults spending over 11% of their health care money on alternative medicine. About 44% of spending was on suppliments, while 35% was spent on approximately 300 million acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, and other CAM visits. That's almost $12 billion dollars a year, and about a quarter of what they are speding on western medicine.

Chinese Medicine Websites
Mon. Mar 02, 2009
There are some great Chinese Medicine sites, and the new links area on the Resources page is the best of what's out there! Links are broken down into 8 sections, and listed top to bottom, based on popularity, within each section. The higher a site is in a section, the more popular it is on the web. The site popularity data is daily updated Google Page Rank and Alexa Rank numbers, with the Google Page Rank being more heavily weighted. If you have a site to add, feel free to submit it via email or quick feedback.

Visual Materia Medica of Chinese HerbsThe Visual Materia Medica of Chinese Herbs books are here, and they are beautiful. This is truly a valuable resource if you're studying Chinese herbs, or you just want to brush up on your pronounciation, Latin, or Chinese characters. I have taken some pictures of the actual book, which I will put up in a few days.

This is also the first product in our online store and will help us pay for expanding the content on sacredlotus.com. Please help this site and support Chinese Medicine... buy a book or make a donation.

Expanded Chinese Characters for Chinese Herbs
Tue. Jan 06, 2009
I've added Chinese characters to approximately 50 more Chinese herbs on the site. There are now over 410 Chinese herbs with characters (ideograms), and almost 450 Chinese herbs with pinyin tone marks.

As I was working on this, I discovered Primezero's Chinese English Online dictionary. You can enter Chinese characters, English words, phrases, even pinyin with tone marks. It has many of the Chinese Herbs as well. A great site, and it looks mobile ready.

5 Star Ratings for Chinese Herbs, Formulas, and Acupuncture Points
Mon. Dec 08, 2008
A 5 star rating and comment system has been created for all the herbs, formulas, and points on the web site.

For Acupuncture points, you can rate the difficulty/ease of locating/needling a point. For Chinese herbs and formulas, you can rate how well tolerated the substance is and how easy the substance is to find. You can also rate the effectiveness and popularity of all points, herbs, and formulas. Rate just one, or rate them all.

If you are a student or practitioner, please get involved and start rating and commenting. Or, use Quick Feedback at the bottom of the page to let us know how we can improve the rating system.

For now, all ratings are subject to approval, but in time you'll be able to register for a free account to make rating easier.

Search Engine Update
Tue. Nov 25, 2008
All the links to acupuncture points, Chinese herbs, and Chinese formulas have been changed for search engine optimization. Both the URL's and the page titles reflect the name of the point, herb, or formula.

The site automatically redirects from the old link to the new link, so all the old links should still work.

TCM Formula Archetypes
Fri. Nov 21, 2008
Each TCM formula now has a "Formula Archetypes" button. When you click this button, the system looks through all the formulas in the database looking for formulas with as many of the same herbs as possible. It then returns a list of formulas, sorted by category and number of matching Chinese herbs.

The "Formula Archetypes" page can also be used on it's own to find Traditional Chinese Medicine formulas that contain the Chinese herbs you specify. Check it out here: [ Chinese Formula Archetypes ]
